As the need for nurses increases — the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) predicts that the shortage of nurses will increase by 260,000 RNs by 2025 — many nursing schools have popped up in every state in the country.
Many colleges and universities have offered nursing programs for years; others only recently added nursing degree programs or a nursing school. Regardless of how old or new a nursing college is, you’ll undoubtedly have several nursing school or nursing degree programs from which to choose in your state.
As you research a nursing college in which you’re interested, make sure the nursing school is accredited by at least one of two national bodies that accredit nursing degree programs. One is the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The other is the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The CCNE accredits only master’s anc bachelor’s nursing degree programs, while the NLNAC accredits all types of nursing schools, from those that offer associate of science in nursing degrees (ASN) to bachelor’s programs (BSN), as well as master’s and doctorate nursing degree programs.
